Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure game, has expanded in acceptance so quickly.
Omaha hi/lo begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A round of wagering ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of wagering happens. Once all the players have either called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where some entrants often get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must utilize exactly three cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical approach in almost all poker games.
The low hand is more difficult, but really opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand takes the entire pot.
Although it seems complex initially, following a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the base nuances of play with ease. Since you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 offers an amazing array of betting possibilities and because you have numerous individuals battling for the high, and many trying for the low hand. If you like a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha hi lo.
