Phil Ivey has been referred to as the greatest poker competitor on the globe by many of the top-ranked professionals. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and moved to NJ before reaching turning one. His grandfather taught Phil one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was hooked on poker and wished to pickup every little thing he possibly could about poker. He routinely told his elders that he was planning on being a professional poker player. Phil didn’t allow the negative comments from others destroy his ambition of becoming one of the strongest poker players in the world.
He started playing intently after getting a false ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his game at the casinos of Atlantic City. The first few years for him were a teaching opportunity and coming away with a win was not a common outcome at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he achieved 2 final tables and won his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the closing table he defeated a number of the well known pros including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He made a decision to take his game to the next level and moved out west to Sin City. He continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Ivey credits his success to dedication and an eternal passion for poker. Phil states that he’s learning every day and is incredibly humble about his success. Phil knows he makes blunders every single session of poker and constantly strives to improve.
Even though Ivey has come first in some large tournaments, he prefers destroying cash games on a normal basis.
