Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five where he enjoyed playing different card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming very competitive in the above-mentioned card games while competing against his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a bit and headed to New York to play some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were tough as he would play countless hours and don’t win most times. He earned some extra cash by being an assistant for the poker players. He believed he could better his game by balancing his life away from poker. He made an attempt to get more sleep and concentrate more on the game.
The real improvement in his game began when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable players would frequently play against each other. He was able to access a few of the best players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would hone his strategic thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategy ideas to the game of NL Texas Holdem.
Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke master poker. She was a superb student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct choice. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to move out to Las Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the greatest female players the poker world today. Howard relocated to Vegas in 1993 and participated in money games for the next 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard decided to play more tournaments.
