Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant variation, has expanded in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha Hi-Lo begins like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. One more sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the players have either called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of betting ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers will have to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a few entrants can get flustered. Contrasted to Hold’em, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to utilize exactly three cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same concept in nearly every poker game.
A lower hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand wins the complete pot.
While it seems complex at first, following a few rounds you will be able to get the fundamental subtleties of play easily enough. Since you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better provides an amazing collection of wagering possibilities and seeing that you have numerous players shooting for the high, and several shooting for the low hand. If you love a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to play Omaha hi-low.
