Phil Ivey has been branded as the greatest poker competitor in the world by most of the top-ranked professionals. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to Jersey before reaching the age of 1. His grandfather introduced him to penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, he was addicted to poker and wished to pickup whatever he possibly could about the game. He routinely told his grandparents that he was going to be a professional poker player. He did not let the negative comments from other people destroy his goal of becoming one of the greatest poker players in the world.
He started playing seriously after getting a fake ID by the name of Jerome. He sharpened his techniques at the casinos in Atlantic City. The initial number of years for him were a teaching opportunity and winning wasn’t a normal outcome at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker when he made 2 final tables and won his first WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the closing table he defeated quite a few of the better known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He made a decision to take his game to the next level and moved out west to Sin City. He continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Phil credits his success to discipline and a continuing love for the game of poker. He states that he is learning every single day and is quite humble about his success. Phil admits to making errors every single game of poker and constantly aspires to improve.
Despite the fact that Phil has won some large tournaments, he favors destroying money games on a regular basis.
